On the Road to Publication

Goooooooooood afternoon my lovely little pixies!

Currently trapped in my bedroom as there’s an obscene amount of pollen flying about in the air today. So I’m stuck indoors, behind closed doors, locked windows, sat beside a steadily-heating-up air purifier from 1999. So far I’m thriving on six cups of coffee and one sausage roll. I’m Northern, I can do this.

Few things to update on:

Just sent the blurb, acknowledgements, and dedication off to Inspired Quill. I was gracious enough to thank the people that matter, and curse the people who were mean. And the blurb… Oh, the blurb. YOU EVIL LITTLE THING. I’ve spent almost every waking minute thinking about it. I’ve shown it to a few friends to get some feedback. After wrestling with it for two weeks, I think it’s good enough to get a good proper editing now.

Speaking of Inspired Quill, guess who’s got a smexy shiny new website?

Ohhhh yeah.

Ohhhh yeah.

Go on, click the image. It’ll take you flying through space and time to the beautiful new site 😀 Click it, go on. Go on. I spent longer than I should’ve done trying to figure out how to link it up, go on.

In other news, in August I’m heading down to London. What’s that? To a convention, you ask? No, silly. I’m going to the Warner Bros. Studios with my best friend, for the Harry Potter tour. Just bought myself a Slytherin t-shirt for the day, too. Yes, I’m a Slytherin. No, I’m not a Death Eater. WE ARE NOT ALL EVIL.

Look at that cutesy-wutesy face ^-^

Look at that cutesy-wutesy face ^-^

So, between now and August, when I’m getting the edits back from IQ to do the final once over before it goes to the proofreader, I’ll be working on… (drum roll, please)…

Since The Old Ways ends so ambiguously (you’ll see), I thought it only fitting that certain characters get some closure. However, closure is definitely not what they’re going to get. They’re going to get severely tortured. I won’t lie, it’s gonna hurt, guys. Check out the tagline:

Fragile alliances will be forged in flames.
Ancient evils will be resurrected to seek vengeance.
Powerful foes will rise to sow discord.
The Age of Magic has come.

Catchy, huh? 🙂 Oh, that’s also the current working title, The Age of Magic. Old favourites come back to play, new faces make an appearance, Albion gets shaken to the core. To be crude, shit hits the fan.

Best get writing!

Blessed be, my darling pixies.

Why RK hates writing prophecies

And other assorted “fate” related chapters.

(Just FYI, this post will mostly be a rant, rather than an actual post)

I’ve always hated the idea of my characters doing something because “fate” or “destiny” says so. For me, reading the words “The Chosen One” or “destined to” are massive turn offs if I’m reading something that had previously been interesting. Case in point, Harry Potter.

Calm down, I'm not about to badmouth the Boy Who Lived...

Calm down, I’m not about to badmouth the Boy Who Lived…

Yes, I loved the books. The films were… okay. The games were just plain weird. But yes, as soon as I read the words “the Chosen One”, my heart sank. It’s not that it’s a bad concept or anything, it just irritates the hell out of me when something that has previously had no mention of deity or higher power suddenly has a plot device in which the main character has been chosen by aforementioned Higher Power to achieve greatness.

In Harry Potter for example, who exactly was it that “chose” Harry? Wizard God? Merlin himself?

Don’t get me wrong, I love this franchise. I loved it so much, I glossed over the Chosen One business and it became one of my biggest fandoms.

However, like all ranting madwomen, I’m a massive hypocrite. I’m guilty of this little plot point… in the original, and in the sequel. Which is currently in progress, more on that later. In The Old Ways, Thomas is chosen by the Old Gods to– well, spoilers. But still…

And in the sequel, I broke my biggest rule of “never include a seer or a prophecy”, and included both. The Keeper of Lore, a past-keeping, present-watching, future-seeing, general know-it-all thorn in my side with a massive tome in her lap. And what do you know, she comes complete with her own flavour of mysticism and a prophecy that, thankfully, doesn’t rhyme. I couldn’t get the wording right.

And although I don’t seem that happy with her, I’ve been planning her for ages. I think I’m just bitter because I had to prise apart two chapters and stick hers in the middle, which means I had to go into every subsequent chapter and insert references to her, and memories, and foreshadowing, and… gugh, I’m going to go pass out…

Blessed be, my darling pixies.

‘Tis the season to be *hic* jolly!

Well, it’s December! That means it’s nearly Christmas! I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

Yes, as soon as December rolls around, I turn into an overgrown child. The tree is up, the advent calendar is open, the lights are twinkling, the tinsel is… all over the floor. And there’s no sign of snow anywhere… well, I can’t have everything, I guess.

And because I’m so ridiculously organised, I’m all sorted and ready for Christmas, all presents are wrapped, bagged and tagged, and the cupboards are stocked with food and drink, and we have chestnuts. Because what is winter without chestnuts? 🙂

Oh, and I also have a playlist of Celtic Christmas songs to listen to. Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Celtic Woman… *sigh* life is good.

OH! But I have been writing in the meantime too, of course 🙂 Since starting on the sequel, I’ve discovered things about certain characters that I never thought to discover. And, without giving away too much, there are terrible things about to happen. Terrible, terrible things, that will make me weep to write them…
