I’m Terrible With Deadlines

I’m two days late for my regular blog post! I’m a terrible person, I’m so sorry… I don’t even had an excuse, I just forgot šŸ˜¦ I’m sorry, guys. I think last weekend’s events are catching up with me. Been recharging my batteries. Introversion, for the win!

So, what’s new? Well, it’s my birthday in two days, and I’ve got absolutely nothing planned at all. Well, I’m going for a Chinese with my parents on the nighttime, but that’s about it. I haven’t planned to meet any of my friends or anything. I should probably get on that. To be honest, I hadn’t really noticed my birthday was so close o.O

I might send a last minute message around.

Birthday Dragon! :D

Birthday Dragon!Ā ^-^

Anyway, we’re getting close to the end of the editing stage before zooming The Old Ways off to the formatter. And, of course, what do we find? An enormous gaping plot hole -_- *facepalm*

It’s easily fixed, so that’s not so bad. I’m really surprised we haven’t picked up on it before… I suppose it’s in the middle of a really intense chapter, so people aren’t really paying that much attention to the one particular character who falls into the plot hole.

We’ll fix it, no worries.

Also! (eep, this is exciting!) I’m going to be interviewed by Dianna Gunn at The Dabbler! :O Keep an eye on this fantastic site for upcoming news about new books. And if you subscribe, you get some pretty awesome writing and planning resources!

(And I am absolutely not jealous at all about how cool her website is… šŸ™‚ )

I promise I’ll try and keep up with my regular posting schedule from now on.

Blessed Be!

Tatty & Katie Take London 2015: Slytherins on Tour!

We’re hoooome! London was absolutely amazing. If you ever get the chance to do the Harry Potter tour at the Warner Bros. Studios, definitelyĀ definitelyĀ go do it, because it’s fascinating and fantastic. I did a little vlog of the highlights on my own personal Facebook, but I figured I’d run through some of the best bits with you guys.

Day 1 – Travel, Arrival and First Night

So the train ride down to London was a little delayed, so it took us about five hours instead of three to actually arrive in London. Taryn and I had opposite aisle seats with a table, and as the window seats were vacant, we figured we’d shimmy along so we could get a better view of the British countryside. Of course, this lasted about half an hour, until two obnoxious older men boarded, and basicallyĀ told us to move. Didn’t ask, no.Ā Told.Ā Wow. After realising one of them was extremely hungover, we returned the rudeness by eating Doritos as loudly and as messilyĀ as possible.

So they eventually left at their stop. They did apologise, and because we’re Northern we both sort of went “Oh, no, it’s okay! Don’t worry about it!” while brushing Dorito crumbs off our shirts.

And then another couple boarded. This time, an American mother and daughter who were also heading down to London. And, because geekiness brings people together, we discovered that they two were Harry Potter fans, so we chatted and talked and pretty much became friends šŸ˜€ oh, and of course I pluggedĀ The Old Ways to them. The mother was a librarian back in the states, so she seemedĀ really interested. They were great fun šŸ˜€

So we arrived in London, and stepping off the train thought that somehow we had ended up inĀ Spain. Oh my goodness, it was so HOT. I think the temperature jumped about 20 degrees. I was foolish enough to wear tall boots and socks and a black t-shirt, so I pretty much melted. This weather didn’t let up, either. It remained a bajillion degrees almost the entire weekend.

The view from our hotel window :D

The view from our hotel window

Our first night, we were also given a complimentary meal, for which we could choose any restaurant from an Imperial Franchise hotel. So we decided on a nice-looking hotel down the street. Okay, we’ll never do that again. The food, although it was nice, was kinda cold. The staff were beyond rude. And we were practically pushed out of the door without ceremony. There was no friendliness at all. Not one waiter smiled. We felt very intimidated. But, thankfully, it was the only time we felt uncomfortable during our trip.

Day 2 – Warner Bros Studios

This was the day we’d been building up to. The most exciting day of the whole weekend. The Harry Potter tour! Dressed, of course, in our Slytherin t-shirts (Slytherin Pride, yo!)

We had our breakfast and headed off. We arrived a little early, so we went to a cafe and had a cuppa while we waited. This place was nice. It was cute and cosy and a little small, but it felt quite homey, so we could relax here. Our tour bus arrived, and we headed off to the studio.

Would've been cool if it had been designed to look like the Knight Bus, but y'know :)

It was still blisteringly hot outside, so we shuffled along inside and milled about for a while. Eventually we got inside (a little late because of the length of the queue). The tour… wow. It’s apparently meant to last about 2 hours, but we stayed from 11:30 until about 3:30. Apparently the record is 13 hours?! :O

So we got the initial guided tour of the Great Hall (and got very offended when some people booed the Slytherin robes against the wall), and were set loose to look around at our own pace. General props and sets first, costumes, the Yule Ball, Dumbledore’s Office, the Gryffindor Dorm, Malfoy Manor, Borgin & Burkes, Diagon Alley. The full exteriorĀ of Privet Drive. The huuuuge door to the Chamber of Secrets.

I think our favourite part was the creature workshop, where all the animatronics, the waxworks, the creature designs, etc, were. I did, however, stagger back and had to grab onto Taryn when I saw theĀ enormous model of Aragog. Not only did they HANG IT IN THE AIR LOOKING DOWN ON YOU, but it’s absolutely gigantic. I think it was bigger than my own living room. Which is really not cool when you have severe arachnophobia. However, I was distracted by the model of the Hungarian Horntail head, and the head of the basilisk.

Gift shop, of course. My stepdad wanted socks, I bought him a Gryffindor pair. Bought some Harry Potter themed sweeties. Bought a wand. Cause why not? I really wanted Luna’s wand, but I ended up with Bellatrix’s instead. She’s my second favourite character šŸ˜€

Day 3 – Picadilly Circus, Rain, and The Return Home

By Day 3, we were both pretty exhausted. Day 2 had really taken it out of both of us, so we decided to have a little trip into the heart of the city and do some tourist-y things. We didn’t get that much time, so we ended up just walking around Trafalgar Square, taking a few pictures. We shuffled off to lunch at a posh little cafeĀ where the cakes were so intricate I swear they’d been made by teeny tiny imps.

And then the heavens opened.

ItĀ bucketed down. I loved it. Every Londoner was running to hide under shelter. Taryn and I just went “meh” and walked out. I’ve danced in a lot worse, but it was refreshing and invigorating. By the time we got back to the hotel, we were drenched and ridiculously happy.

And then, of course, it was time to come home. One taxi-ride later (driven by possibly the world’s most depressed driver), we arrived at King’s Cross, boarded our butts onto the train, and came home.

But I think the best bit about this entire holiday was coming home to see my normally antisocial little kitty running towards me as soon as I walked in the door, chirping her little kitty head off, and planting big wet kitty kisses all over my nose.

I love my Loony Luna. And I’m so pleased she loves me too.

Blessed Be, my darling pixies!

Drive-By-Posting Pt 2

This is just going to be a really quick post. I know it’s really late in the day (I’m so terrible with deadlines šŸ˜¦ ) I’ve actually spent most of the day packing my case and rushing to the shops to pick up the last-minute essentials for next weekend’s trip.

I’ve made a list. I’m good at lists.

I also realised, while I was in the bath, that although the cover release/reveal date is this Tuesday, it’s also the same day I get my hair done. So. I’ll be at work in the day time (boring day job, ugh šŸ˜¦ ), and being styled on the evening. However, there’s a 20 minute window when I’ll post the cover with a head coveredĀ of tin foils.

For… the highlights, not for, like, aliens or something.

It’s so weird, I love anything to do with faeries or the supernatural (unless it’s a terrifying shadow-demon preventing me from breathing. Please see previous posts), I’m not that into aliens. I’m not particularly interested in “scary” movies about aliens (like Signs or theĀ Alien franchise), although I do enjoyĀ Doctor WhoĀ andĀ Star Wars.

I’d still rather watchĀ Merlin.

I’ve also just been shredded by Luna. She’s been outside so she’s all hyped up on catching that one tiny moth.

You see those fangs? Those fangs HURT.

“I vant to suck your blood! Nah, just kidding. Give me some chicken or something.”

You see those fangs? They really hurt… *nurses bloody arm*

Awww, I can’t stay mad at this cute little smooshy face! ^-^

Luna Cute

Who’s my vicious little dragon? You are! Yes, you are!

So Dolly Parton just came on my iTunes Shuffle, I’m gonna go sing Jolene intoĀ a hairbrush. Why? Because why not? šŸ˜€

Blessed be, my darling pixies!

Thanks, Winchesters

I’m trying to post twice a week, once on a Saturday and once on a Wednesday. As you can see, the first week of doing so and I’m already a day late -_-

Having recently “updated” my laptop to Windows 8.1, I pretty much had to set up everything from scratch. Reinstall Skype. Reinstall Norton Antivirus. Reinstall the stupid Mail app tile thing that is meant to make my life easier but is actually harder to control than a hyperactive puppy with ADD. Only good thing is that I didn’t lose all of my files. (I had backed everything up JUST in case, but thankfully it wasn’t needed).

I became irrationally stressed about the whole thing šŸ˜¦

Onnnnn the plus side, we’re officially halfway through the final edits before the manuscript goes to the formatter. Obviously it has to go through the “final tweaks” stage. D’you think it’s too late to introduce a new character? (I’M KIDDING!!!)

In other news, I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time last night. I would very much like to never ever experience it again. All I remember is “waking up” to find a dark shape hovering over me (that for some reason I could only see out of the corner of my eye), being utterly unable to move my body, unable to draw breath, but trying to shout for my mother to come and “get rid of the demon!”.

Honestly, with my imagination, I’m really surprised I’ve never experienced sleep paralysis before. I’ve had extravagant dreams and terrifying nightmares, but nothing like that before. Everyone assures me it’s normal. Probably the only thing about me that’s “normal”. Thankfully, a rarely-heard rational voice in my brain told me I was experiencing sleep paralysis, so I closed my eyes and waited for my body to wake up naturally. It was possibly the most intense 10-15 seconds of my entire life.

“If I close my eyes, the demon will get me!”

… that’s it though, isn’t it? What if it wasn’t a dream? What if there reallyĀ was a demon in my room last night? What if I’m not really me right now? What if I’m possessed? How can I be sure?

Nah, I’m pretty sure demons aren’t stupid enough to trip over their own feet while walking up stairs and bite the insides of their mouths while eating a brioche for breakfast. Almost certain demons don’t have brioches for breakfast, anyway.

Quick check though; best to be safe…

Okay, so I just drew a circle of salt on the floor and I can quiteĀ easily pass over it. I’m not possessed. Awesome ^-^

ThankĀ you, Supernatural, for teaching me how to get rid of demons. And for bringing the adorableness of Castiel to my attention.

If you're pretty and you know it, nod your head!

If you’re pretty and you know it, nod your head!

Best get back to editing.Ā Blessed be, my darling pixies!

Shameless Promo

If any of my followers enjoy multiplayer online gaming, one of my close friends runs a very awesome stream on Twitch a few times a week (links below). The best thing about it is that she has very cool giveaways after every milestone! (Every 50 followers at the moment) šŸ˜€ Once she hits 200, one lucky personĀ will win the gameĀ Letter QuestĀ for Steam. (Steam if free to download ifĀ you don’t have it).

And after the release ofĀ The Old Ways, she’s going to be kind enough to promote it in one of her videos šŸ˜€ The perks of mutual promos!

TwitchĀ <<< this is the one to follow to be in with a chance of winning the games!

Soooo, who’s excited forĀ The Old Ways released next month? šŸ˜€ I sure am! I keep making these abhorrent squeaky noises for which I have to apologiseĀ a lot. Received some edits back from my publisher the other day.

I know it’s childish, but I really love the little notes she puts in the margins that say “I love this bit!” or “She’s my favourite character :D”. There was one instance where I got so happy I covered my face with my hands and made a noise that’s basically the verbal equivalent of “asdaghdgfnjxhdfiuahsdfb”.

How one actually makes that noise, I don’t even know.

In the meantime, Luna has found her new favourite hiding place in the house. Meaning, it’s inside my bed. No, I don’t mean under the covers. I mean INSIDE my bed. There’s a little cubby hole where spare duvets go, and of course, this in Kitty World means “OOH NEW BED”. Took us twenty minutes to coax her out the other night. With food and treats and flattery.

In Nerd-Land, I still haven’t seen Ant-Man. Have seen Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, though. Still prefer the first one. I think it’s the lack of Loki… On the plus side, it’s only 726 days until Thor 3: Ragnarok!

And Once Upon A Time has announced the inclusion of Merida in the new season. Since she’s my favourite princess of the “NuDisney” movies, I really hope they don’t mess her up šŸ˜¦ And there’s the whole “Merlin” plotline going on. If they mess him him, I’ll go absolutely spare. SPARE, I TELL YOU.

EDIT – “go spare”Ā means “get really mad and/or go nuts”, for people who don’t speak crazy.

Also, it’s only two weeks until Tatome and I go to London! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜€ šŸ˜€ Two Slytherins on a trip to the South. As Northerners, we’re a little terrified of the sheer enormity. Well, I am. I keep hearing Londoners are really rude, is that true? I hope not šŸ˜¦

Got my Slytherin t-shirt at the ready, though šŸ˜€

Wow this post ended up being so much longer than anticipated. I’m so sorry. Heh. No I’m not. Once I get going, that’s it. I’m away for ages. Reminds me of another Northerner with a penchant for rambling, actually…

That's Ross Noble, you heathens. PS check him out, he's hilarious :)

That’s Ross Noble, you heathens.

I’d best get back to editing. Blessed be, pixies!

Super Quick Blog Post

This is what I like to call a drive by blog posting.

I’m justĀ popping in to say I’m still here. Just been a shade busy the past few weeks. I’m currently working on The Age of Magic, rewriting some characters, pushing back the appearance of one or two people.

I’ll be honest, I started working on this about a year and a half ago, but I had to dedicate more focus to The Old Ways as the release date grew closer. Now I’m getting a nice balance.

Previous drafts of AoM had a certain character being very wimpy and sickly, and I never really liked that. I felt like, with a family like his, he should have more of an attitude. I’m rewriting him to be more of a trouble-maker. Picking locks to get to places where he shouldn’t.

A few characters from ToW return, older and (hopefully) wiser.

Okay, so one of them (I won’t say who) has just pulled me aside to say none of them are any wiser. *sigh* -_-

In other news, keep your eyes peeled for a sneak peek at the cover of The Old Ways coming up soon!

Back to writing, my darling pixies!

Blessed be

RK’s Feelings Towards Game of Thrones, S5E10: Mother’s Mercy, aka, WHAT THE F*CK JUST HAPPENED?

Proceed at your own risk.

Proceed at your own risk.

How to make everyone scream in rage within 30 seconds of screen time: kill the most universally beloved character in the entire show.

I don’t exactly know the order in which I’m coping with this tragedy, but I’m hovering somewhere in the “denial” stage. Melisandre just arrived at Castle Black. She’ll fix him. She’s already shown she’s got a thing for that adorable puppy-eyed, black-haired Crow. I danced with the “anger” stage for a while. In this case it means I had a minor flail and threw myself over the arm of the chair. I only encountered “sadness” during the scene itself, where I released a pitiful and distinctly uncool whine. Much like a dog when it loses it’s favourite tennis ball.

Haven’t quite reached “bargaining” yet. And I don’t think there’ll ever be an “acceptance”.

Not cool, GRRM. Not cool AT ALL.

*heavy breathing*

After careful consideration and about twenty-five seconds of thinking, I have come to the conclusion that, yes, I will continue to watch the show. And I also realised that I pretty muchĀ did the exact same thing to several of my own characters, so I honestly can’t complain.

Dear future readers of The Old Ways,

I’m so sorry.

Sincerely, RK.

Blessed be. Raise your pitchforks for in the morning when we storm the HBO studios.

And now his Watch has ended.

And now his Watch has ended.

Humans Are Weird

I recently learned that someone I know doesn’t like bread. I mean, what? Who doesn’t like bread? It’s like the blandest of foods. How can you not like bread? It’s so versatile. Don’t you eat toast? What about sandwiches? What about bagels? Is it just white bread? Is it the texture or the taste you don’t like? This has really messed me up.

In other news,Ā I’VE SEEN THE INITIAL DRAWING OF THE FRONT COVER FOR THE OLD WAYSĀ AND IT LOOKS AWESOME šŸ˜€ I was almost in tears when I first saw it. Which wasn’t good, since I was at work and everyone thought some nasty person had upset me. I’m too emotional for my own good.

Heeeeyyy who’s been watching Game of Thrones? (I HAVEN’T SEEN THE LAST EPISODE OF SEASON 5 NO SPOILERS EVERYONE SHUSH.) I just wanted to bring it up because of this:

It’s been my dream since I was a wee child to ride a dragon. So when I saw this scene, I was so hyped. I mean, my face was actually the shape of the :O emoji. BUT, my only problem is– well… look at that gif again. Really look at it. It’s really bugging me. It bugged me when I first watched it, and it’s bugging me watching it again here.

Okay, I know it’s moving a little bit, I’m not completely mental. But for those of you with uber long hair (like myself), you’ll know how less-than-awesome you feel when you get lashed in the face by your own locks. Sometimes, if it’s really windy, and I’m talking to someone, I will actually inhale my own hair. I pull the most gruesome of faces and start hacking up hairballs like a giant cat.

But Daenerys? Oh no. She gets this lovely doe-eyed look and a gentle breeze tickling her face, while she’s currently RIDING AN ENORMOUS BLACK FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON. I mean, come on! Try toĀ look a little less JulietĀ and a little more Xena.

Also, it kinda looks like she’s wearing jeans under that delicate silk frock. Just sayin’.

I miss Viserys šŸ˜¦ sure, he was a psychotic megalomaniac Disk One Final Boss, but he was still a cool villain. And it was Harry Lloyd.

I'm starting to suspect I have a thing for sharp cheekbones.

I’m starting to suspect I have a thing for sharp cheekbones…

There was something else I wanted to talk about as well, but for the life of me I can’t quite remember what it was… oh, I guess it wasn’t that important. I’m sure I’ll remember at ten to midnight tonight when I’m just about to fall asleep. Oh well.

Blessed be, my darling pixies,

RK )O(

I’m covered in glitter

And I don’t quite remember why. The only logical conclusion is that I was kidnapped by faeries when I was sleeping last night. Yes, this is why. I have accepted this as the only reason why I’m covered in glitter.

SO THEN, it’s been a while since any semblance of updates have come from the upside-down world of RK, and the reason behind this is because… well, I didn’t have any updates. ‘Tis true, I’ve been squirreled away in my little world of magic and mayhem, and mostly forgotten that there’s a whole world out there.

Well, in the past two weeks, I’ve been sent the first few pages of edits back from Sara, my lovely publisher, and we have both agreed that the release date needs to be pushed back a little. This is mostly due to the fact that I have had a grand total of zero experience in the world of creative writing. By that, I mean I’ve been on no courses, achieved no awards, and spoken to no editors in my entire life. Therefore, I write from the heart, not from the head. Which can be a good thing, but can also be extraordinarily destructive in terms of publication.

Sara describes it thusly; “storytelling is a skill, writing is a talent. You have the skill, but the talent needs polishing.”

So, dear Sara has agreed to set me up with a nice lady who will Skype me to go through a course, of sorts, on creative writing. This way, future manuscripts will need significantly less editing. I’m actually a little ashamed at how much The Old Ways needs to be edited… but, I suppose, as Sara says, this is what Inspired Quill aspires to do. Seek out new blood and mold us into dazzling authors. I want to dazzle. It’s like glittering, but with more jazz hands.

Meanwhile, in Albion, a vicious monster-thief who goes by the name of Writer’s Block has crept into Elphame to cause havoc amongst the citizens. Thankfully, it’s dual-weilding arch-enemies, Coffee and North-East Stubbornness, have prevailed, and the train has continued on its happy track. I think that metaphor ran away with me, but you get the idea. I think I was subconsciously avoiding the moment when I have to kill off a particular character. I really don’t want to do it. Like, really, really don’t want to do it. But needs must.

*sobs hysterically*

Oh, Albion, thou art a heartless bitch… that’s all from me for now. If anyone needs me, I’ll be curled up under my blankets, sleeping off a glittery hangover.

Blessed be

What 2013 Taught Me

I had something of a philosophical moment when I was in the bath. My toes were playing with the chain attached to the plug and my mind wandered.

2013 taught me a lot of things. It was probably the biggest year of my life. A lot of things happened, a lot of things didn’t happen which almost did, and even more things didn’t even come close to happening.

In 2013, I learned that first impressions are not always correct, and the person you think you can’t stand, becomes a good friend and powerful ally.

I learned that, despite Disney’s incessant insisting, a woman can finally reach her dream without needing a man to help her along the way.

I learned that people are hard, and cruel, and unfair. But people are also good, and kind, and loving. One just needs to distinguish which ones are which.

I learned that being so close to dying doesn’t actually change the way you live your life. If anything, it just makes you appreciate the way you’ve lived up until now.

On a related note, I learned that when I don’t want to eat a cinnamon swirl, something is terribly wrong with me.

I learned that, to some people, money is more important that family, that those are the people I don’t need in my life.

I probably learned a lot more than this, but my brain is full of Spiral Dance and I haven’t had coffee in over nine hours… NINE hours. I don’t even know how I’m still functioning.

Most importantly, 2013 was the year in which my manuscript was accepted for publication, after almost seventeen years of waiting. That moment where I hold my novel in my hands for the first time, smell its paper, thumb through its pages, see the names of my characters printed and bound… it would be indescribable.

To make up for my lack of articulation, here are two adorable wolf cubs.

D’awwww, look at those cute widdle smooshy faces! *pouts*

… *cough*

Blessed be,
